Victims Compensation The Georgia Crime Victims Compensation Program eases the financial burden faced by victims of violent crimes by covering expenses related to medical bills, funeral expenses, mental health counseling and crime scene sanitization, as well as loss of income or support.

For crimes occurring prior to July 1, , an application must be filed within 1 year of the crime, unless good cause is shown a claim submitted 3 years after the victimization cannot be considered. However, if the victim is a minor at the time of the victimization, he or she can file an application until 3 years after his or her eighteenth birthday. If good cause is shown, the Board may extend the time for filing a claim.

If a claim is denied or the compensation amount reduced by the hearing officer, the victim has the right to appeal the decision to the Crime Victim's Reparations CVR Committee. The appeal must be made in writing and received within 30 days after the decision to deny or reduce the compensation amount is mailed to the victim.

The victim is notified and must be present at the appeal hearing. If the CVR Committee upholds the hearing officer's decision to deny or reduce a claim, the victim may appeal in district court within 30 days of the CVR Committee's action.
